Kobo battery draining fast? Causes and fixes for every Kobo model

Your Kobo is supposed to last weeks between charges. That is one of the main reasons people buy an e-reader instead of using a tablet. So when you find yourself reaching for the charging cable every few days — or worse, every single night — it is both confusing and disappointing. Did the battery suddenly degrade? Is a firmware update to blame? Or did you accidentally leave something running that is silently draining power?

The answer is usually not the battery itself. Most Kobo battery problems trace back to software, settings, or how the device is being used. This guide covers every Kobo model from the Clara BW to the Elipsa 2E, including the colour models, with real fixes that have worked for thousands of Kobo owners.

1. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: the number one battery killer

Wireless radios consume far more power than anything else on your Kobo. If Wi-Fi is left on after syncing or downloading books, the device keeps pinging for network updates even when you think it is idle. Go to Settings → Wi-Fi connection → Disconnect after every sync session. Do not just rely on sleep mode to turn it off.

On newer models like the Libra Colour, Sage, and Elipsa, there is also Bluetooth for audiobook playback. If you are not actively listening to an audiobook, turn Bluetooth off at Settings → Bluetooth connection → Turn off. Leaving Bluetooth on in the background can cut your battery life in half.

The easiest habit to build: enable Airplane Mode when you are not actively downloading books or syncing. Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap the airplane icon, and forget about it. Many Kobo users report going from 3-4 days of battery life to 3-4 weeks just by keeping Airplane Mode on.

2. Screen brightness and auto-wake cover magnets

The front light is the second largest power draw after wireless radios. Running your Kobo at 100% brightness drains the battery roughly three times faster than at 30%. Lower your brightness to whatever is comfortable — most people find 20-30% perfectly readable indoors.

Also check your Settings → Energy saving and privacy → Automatically turn off after setting. Set it to a shorter duration (5-10 minutes) so the device actually powers down when you put it down, rather than staying on indefinitely.

An unexpected culprit: magnetic sleep covers. If your third-party cover has a poorly aligned magnet, it can cause the Kobo to wake up and go back to sleep repeatedly while closed, draining the battery in hours. If you notice unusually fast drain after buying a new case, try using the Kobo without the cover for a day and compare.

3. Book indexing: the hidden post-purchase drain

Every time you add new books to your Kobo — whether via the Kobo Store, sideloading, or library borrowing — the device indexes them in the background. This process scans every page of every new book to build the search database, and it is surprisingly CPU-intensive.

If you just loaded 50 books onto a new Kobo or a freshly reset device, expect the battery to drain significantly faster for the first 24-48 hours. During this period, keep the device plugged in when possible. Once indexing completes, battery life returns to normal. To check if indexing is still in progress, search for a nonsense word like “zzzztest” — if the search is slow or the device lags, indexing is likely still running.

4. Firmware bugs and updates

Kobo releases firmware updates roughly monthly, and occasionally an update introduces a battery regression. If your battery problems started right after a firmware update, you are not imagining things — Kobo has had a handful of updates over the years that caused exactly this issue for certain models.

First, make sure you are running the latest firmware: go to Settings → Device information → Software version. As of mid-2026, the latest versions are in the 4.38-4.40 range depending on your model. If you are on an older version, a manual update might fix the drain.

To manually update, download the correct firmware file from Kobo’s official firmware page, extract the zip, and copy the KoboRoot.tgz file into the .kobo folder on your device via USB. Eject and unplug — the Kobo will reboot and install the update.

5. Sideloaded EPUBs that keep the CPU awake

Not all EPUBs are created equal. A poorly formatted book — one with excessively complex CSS, embedded JavaScript, or a massive number of tiny chapter files — can keep the Kobo’s CPU active long after you have stopped reading. If the battery drains noticeably faster when reading a specific book, that book’s formatting is likely the problem.

Run suspicious EPUBs through Calibre’s “Polish books” function or Kepubify to convert them to KEPUB format, which Kobo handles much more efficiently. If you sideload a lot of books, consider converting everything to KEPUB as a preventative measure — your battery will thank you.

6. Age and temperature

Lithium-ion batteries degrade with age, plain and simple. If your Kobo is three or more years old and battery life has been gradually declining over months rather than dropping suddenly, the battery itself is the most likely explanation. There is no software fix for a worn-out battery — it needs to be physically replaced.

Temperature also matters more than most people realize. Lithium batteries lose capacity in cold weather and degrade faster in extreme heat. Do not leave your Kobo in a hot car in summer or on a freezing windowsill in winter. The ideal operating temperature range is 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F).

7. When all else fails: factory reset

If you have tried everything above and your Kobo still drains from full to empty in a day or two, a factory reset is the nuclear option. Settings → Device information → Factory reset your Kobo will wipe everything and return the device to its out-of-the-box state. This clears any corrupted system files, stuck background processes, or misbehaving plugins that might be causing the drain.

Before resetting, make sure your books are backed up — anything purchased from the Kobo Store will be available to re-download, but sideloaded content will be permanently deleted. After the reset, set up the device fresh and test the battery for a few days before reloading all your books. If the battery is still terrible after a clean reset, the hardware is the problem.
