
You grab a Kobo to sync a new library book, and nothing happens. The Wi-Fi icon spins indefinitely. Or it connects for a moment, then drops. Or your network does not even appear in the list. Kobo Wi-Fi issues can be genuinely frustrating, especially because the error messages are not helpful — the device just silently fails to connect without telling you why.
Here are the fixes that solve most Kobo Wi-Fi problems, tested on every model from the Clara BW to the Elipsa 2E.
1. Restart the Kobo (First, Always)
Before troubleshooting anything else, restart the device. Go to Settings → Device information → Restart. A simple restart clears temporary network configuration glitches and resolves a surprising number of connection issues. Do this even if the device seems to be working otherwise — Kobo’s Wi-Fi stack can get into a confused state without showing any other symptoms.
2. Check Your Router’s Frequency Band
This is the single most common cause of “my Kobo cannot see my Wi-Fi network.” Most Kobo models only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your router broadcasts only 5GHz, or if your network uses band steering (automatically assigning devices to 2.4GHz or 5GHz under the same SSID), older Kobo devices may not see the network at all.
The fix: log into your router’s admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1), find the wireless settings, and ensure the 2.4GHz band is enabled and broadcasting a visible SSID. If your router uses band steering, temporarily disable it or create a separate 2.4GHz-only SSID for testing.
Models that support 5GHz: Kobo Libra Colour, Kobo Sage, Kobo Elipsa 2E. All other models are 2.4GHz-only.
3. Forget and Re-Add the Network
Sometimes the Kobo holds onto a corrupted network configuration. Go to Settings → Wi-Fi connection, tap your network name, and select Forget. Then re-scan for networks, select yours again, and re-enter the password.
While you are there, verify the password is correct. It sounds obvious, but router passwords change (a roommate updates it, you reset the router), and the Kobo silently fails rather than telling you the password is wrong.
4. Check for Special Characters in the Wi-Fi Password
Kobo’s Wi-Fi implementation sometimes struggles with special characters in passwords, especially symbols like $, &, #, and !. If your Wi-Fi password contains these characters, try temporarily changing it to something with only letters and numbers (for testing), and see if the Kobo connects. If it does, the special character is the problem, and you need a simpler password or a firmware update.
5. Move Closer to the Router
E-readers have smaller Wi-Fi antennas than phones or laptops. If a Kobo is on the edge of your router’s range — in a bedroom far from the living room, for example — it may see the network but fail to maintain a stable connection. Move within 15-20 feet of the router and try again.
Physical obstructions matter too: thick walls, metal shelving, and large appliances between the Kobo and the router can weaken the signal significantly.
6. Disable MAC Address Randomization (If Using a Mobile Hotspot)
If you are connecting to a phone’s mobile hotspot, some phones use MAC address randomization for hotspot connections, which can confuse the Kobo. On iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → Maximize Compatibility (turn this on). On Android: check hotspot settings for a “MAC address type” option and set it to “Device MAC” rather than “Randomized MAC.”
7. Factory Reset (Last Resort for Software)
If nothing else works, a factory reset clears all network settings and returns the Kobo to its out-of-box state. Settings → Device information → Factory reset a Kobo. This deletes all content from the device (your Kobo Store purchases will re-download after signing in), so back up sideloaded books first if possible.
After the reset, set up Wi-Fi as a fresh device. In most cases where the Kobo refused to connect due to a corrupted configuration, a factory reset fixes it.
8. Router-Specific Issues
Some routers have settings that block or interfere with e-reader connections:
- MAC address filtering: If your router only allows specific devices by MAC address, the Kobo will be blocked. Check your router’s access control list.
- WPA3-only mode: Some newer routers default to WPA3 encryption. Most Kobos only support WPA2. Set your router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode.
- Guest network isolation: Guest networks sometimes block device-to-device communication, which can interfere with the Kobo’s ability to complete the connection handshake. Try the main network instead of the guest network.
Diagnostic flow: isolate the problem fast
Before you burn an hour trying random fixes, run through this ordered diagnostic. It takes under five minutes and tells you exactly where the failure lives — device, network, or router.
- Test another device on the same Wi-Fi network. If your phone or laptop also can’t connect, the problem is the router or ISP. Skip to the router checks in section 8.
- Hotspot test. Turn on your phone’s mobile hotspot (making sure 2.4GHz is enabled — see the Maximize Compatibility note above). If the Kobo connects to the hotspot but not your home Wi-Fi, the problem is your router configuration, not the Kobo.
- Public Wi-Fi test. If both home Wi-Fi and hotspot fail, try any open network (library, café). If the Kobo connects there, your home network’s security settings are the culprit.
- Ethernet tether test. If you have a USB-C to Ethernet adapter (works on Kobo Sage and Elipsa 2E with compatible firmware), try a wired connection via the USB port. If that works but Wi-Fi doesn’t, the Kobo’s Wi-Fi module may have a hardware fault.
By step 3, you’ll know whether the issue is the Kobo or the network. Most people waste an hour factory resetting the device when the router’s WPA3-only setting was the actual problem all along.
WPA3 incompatibility: the hidden culprit
The WPA3 incompatibility mentioned in step 8 deserves its own section because it’s becoming the most frequent root cause as Wi-Fi 6 and 6E routers proliferate. Here’s why it matters and how it fails.
Wi-Fi Protected Access 3 (WPA3) was introduced in 2018 and is now the default encryption mode on routers from Eero, Google Nest, Netgear Nighthawk, and many ISP-provided gateways. The problem: no Kobo model released before 2025 supports WPA3. Even the Libra Colour and Sage, which have 5GHz radios, negotiate WPA2 only.
When a router is set to WPA3-Only mode, the Kobo sees the network in its scan list but cannot complete the four-way handshake. It will spin indefinitely on “Connecting…” or silently fail back to the network list. There is no error message — Kobo’s Wi-Fi stack simply doesn’t know how to tell you “encryption protocol mismatch.”
The fix: log into your router and set Wi-Fi security to WPA2-Personal (AES) or WPA2/WPA3 Transition Mode (sometimes labeled “WPA2-PSK + WPA3-SAE”). Transition mode allows WPA3-capable devices to use the newer protocol while falling back to WPA2 for older clients like Kobo. Avoid WPA2/WPA3 Mixed Mode if your router labels it that way — some implementations of mixed mode cause exactly the handshake failures they’re supposed to prevent.
If your ISP locks down the router admin panel (common with Xfinity, Spectrum, and AT&T gateways), call their support line and specifically ask them to “add a WPA2-only 2.4GHz SSID to my gateway.” Most can do this remotely.
