The settings that matter most

The most impactful settings are the simplest ones. Font size on a Kindle or Kobo can go much larger than any printed book — size 12 on a Kindle is roughly equivalent to 24-point large print, and Kobo goes even further with 30+ size options. Combine large size with bold level 2 or 3, and text becomes readable even with significant vision loss. Bold thickens the letter shapes without making them bigger, which can be the difference between “I can kind of see it” and comfortable reading.

Line spacing and margins matter more than people realize. Wide line spacing (2.0) prevents lines from blending together, and narrow margins maximize the amount of text on screen so you’re not turning pages every few sentences. Landscape orientation widens the text column, which some readers find easier to track.

Contrast is equally critical. Most e-readers now offer dark mode — white text on a black background — which dramatically reduces glare and helps readers with photophobia or cataract-related light sensitivity. Combined with warm light dialed to amber, dark mode makes reading possible in conditions that would make a printed page painful to look at. On Kindle, this is a toggle in the quick settings menu. On Kobo, it’s under “Invert Screen” in the reading settings. On Boox, you get system-wide dark mode plus per-app inversion control.

Device recommendations by need

The Kindle Paperwhite is my default recommendation for low vision — it’s affordable, the font size goes high, boldness has five levels, and VoiceView provides a full screen reader via Bluetooth. My mom has used hers for two years now and rarely needs help. Setup takes about fifteen minutes: connect Bluetooth headphones, enable VoiceView, set the font to size 10 or 12 with bold level 3, toggle dark mode, and you’re reading.

Kobo Libra Colour edges ahead if you need truly enormous text or want to install accessibility-focused fonts like Atkinson Hyperlegible, which was designed by the Braille Institute with exaggerated letter shapes that are easier to distinguish. Kobo’s font weight slider gives finer control than Kindle’s boldness levels, letting you thicken letterforms in smaller increments. The physical page-turn buttons are also a real advantage for readers with motor difficulties who find touchscreen swiping unreliable.

For severe low vision requiring font sizes beyond what Kindle and Kobo offer, a Boox device running Android is the only answer. Install Moon+ Reader or KOReader and you can scale text to 72pt or beyond. Boox also lets you set system-wide font scaling so menus and book lists are readable, which Kindle and Kobo do not fully support. The trade-off is complexity — Boox devices require more setup and the Android interface is busier — but for someone who would otherwise be unable to read at all, that extra work is worth it.

Text-to-speech and audio options

Text-to-speech options vary widely by brand. E-reader TTS vs audiobooks vs screen readers

Audiobooks are wonderful — professionally narrated, immersive, hands-free. But they are a separate product from the book. If a title doesn’t have an audiobook edition, or if you want to switch between reading visually and listening within the same session, audiobooks don’t help. Screen readers like JAWS or NVDA on a computer are powerful but tied to a desk. An e-reader with TTS sits in the middle: you can listen to any text, anywhere, and switch back to visual reading whenever your eyes feel up to it.
