E-Reader Won't Connect to Wi-Fi? Complete Troubleshooting Guide for 2026

Wi-Fi problems are the most common e-reader complaint. Your device can’t download books, sync your library, or check for firmware updates without a connection. Here’s how to fix it, step by step, for every major brand.

Step 1: Check Your Router Frequency

Most e-readers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Many modern routers combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under a single network name (band steering). If your e-reader can see the network but won’t connect, your router might be forcing 5 GHz.

Fix: Log into your router settings and temporarily disable 5 GHz, or create a separate 2.4 GHz network with a different name. Connect your e-reader, then you can re-enable 5 GHz.

Step 2: Brand-Specific Fixes

Kindle:

  1. Go to Settings → Wi-Fi → Turn off, wait 10 seconds, turn on
  2. If the network list is empty, restart: hold the power button for 40 seconds
  3. If it connects but drops frequently, disable WPA3 in your router — Kindles only support WPA2
  4. As a last resort: Settings → Device Options → Reset → Reset Wi-Fi (this clears saved networks without affecting your books)

Kobo:

  1. Settings → Wi-Fi → Turn off and on
  2. If stuck “Connecting…”, restart the device
  3. Kobo doesn’t support 5 GHz or WPA3 — only 2.4 GHz WPA2
  4. If you recently updated firmware, try forgetting the network and reconnecting

Boox:

  1. Settings → Wi-Fi → Turn off and on
  2. If no networks appear, restart the device
  3. Boox devices support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz — try both
  4. Disable any VPN or proxy apps that might be interfering
  5. Check Settings → Apps → Google Play Services → Clear cache — corrupted Play Services data can block Wi-Fi on Android-based devices

PocketBook:

  1. Settings → Wi-Fi → Turn off and on
  2. PocketBook supports 2.4 GHz only, WPA2 only
  3. Try connecting to a phone hotspot to test if the issue is the router
  4. Factory reset (Settings → Maintenance → Factory Reset) as a last resort

Step 3: Universal Fixes

  • Airplane Mode toggle: Turn Airplane Mode on, wait 10 seconds, turn it off. This resets the Wi-Fi chip.
  • Router restart: Unplug your router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait 2 minutes.
  • Public Wi-Fi: Hotels and cafes often have captive portals (a login page). E-readers can’t display these. Use your phone’s hotspot instead.
  • MAC address filtering: If your router filters by MAC address, add your e-reader’s MAC address (found in Settings → Device Info) to the allowed list.

When to Factory Reset

If nothing works, a factory reset is the nuclear option. Before doing this:

  1. Make sure your books are backed up (Kindle: they’re in your Amazon account; Kobo: sync before reset; Boox: back up to cloud)
  2. Note your account credentials — you’ll need to sign in again

Factory reset is in Settings → Device Options → Reset (Kindle) or Settings → Device Information → Factory Reset (Kobo/Boox/PocketBook).

Prevention

  • Keep your device firmware updated (updates often include Wi-Fi driver fixes)
  • Use a 2.4 GHz-only network if your router supports it
  • Avoid VPNs and proxy apps on Android-based e-readers

In our experience, most Wi-Fi problems are router-side, not device-side. Try the phone hotspot test first — if your e-reader connects to your phone without issues, the problem is your router.
