I’ll be honest — I used to think listening to audiobooks on an e-reader was pointless. Why not just use my phone? Then I had a 90-minute commute and realized switching between my Kindle and phone mid-chapter was driving me nuts. Whispersync changed everything.
Here’s the thing about Kindle audiobooks: Amazon locks you into Audible, hard. There’s no MP3 player, no way to sideload your own files, nothing. If you bought audiobooks from Libro.fm or ripped old CDs, you’re out of luck. But if you’re already in the Audible ecosystem, the experience is genuinely smooth. I’ve been mid-read on my Paperwhite, hopped in the car, and picked up right where I left off through Bluetooth headphones. The gotcha nobody mentions? Audible files are huge — around 200MB each. My 16GB Paperwhite started complaining after about 40 audiobooks.
Also, not every Kindle supports audiobooks. The Basic model’s Bluetooth is strictly for accessibility. You need a Paperwhite (2021+), Oasis, Scribe, or Colorsoft. I learned this the hard way when I recommended a Kindle Basic to my sister for audiobooks. Oops.
Kobo takes a friendlier approach. The Libra Colour and Sage actually have a proper audiobook player, and — this is the big one — you can sideload DRM-free MP3 and M4B files over USB. My Kobo picked up a folder of old lecture recordings I’d converted, no questions asked. It’s not as slick as Kindle’s Whispersync, but the freedom is worth it.
Then there’s Boox. Because it runs Android, you can install literally any audiobook app. I’ve got Audible, Smart Audiobook Player, and Libro.fm all running on my Boox. The built-in speaker on the Palma 2 Pro is surprisingly decent for bedtime listening. The catch? Battery life tanks. What normally lasts two weeks becomes two days if you’re streaming. I keep a charger at my desk now.
For most people, I’d say go Kobo if you want flexibility, Kindle if you’re locked into Audible. But if you want it all, Boox is hard to beat — just bring a charger.
