Epub to mobi: the complete format conversion guide

Ebook format conversion is one of the most common tasks for e-reader users. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Convert Formats?

Different e-readers support different formats:

Method 1: Using Calibre (Best)

Calibre is the gold standard for ebook management and conversion.

  1. Open Calibre and add your ebook
  2. Select the book and click Convert Books
  3. Choose your output format (MOBI, EPUB, etc.)
  4. Customize settings if needed
  5. Click OK

Pro Tips for Calibre Conversion

  • MOBI → Kindle: Use “Both” output (MOBI + AZW3) for best results
  • EPUB → MOBI: Check “Do not add extra margins” in MOBI output
  • PDF → EPUB: Use Heuristic Processing for better results

Method 2: Online Converters

  • Zamzar: Supports all formats, free up to 2 conversions/day
  • Convertio: Good quality, browser-based
  • CloudConvert: High-quality, supports batch conversion

Method 3: Send to Kindle (Simplest)

Amazon’s Send to Kindle service automatically converts EPUB to Kindle format when you email it to your Kindle address. No manual conversion needed.

Scenario: preparing a library for a new Kindle

You’ve just unboxed a Kindle Paperwhite and need to load 200 books from your Kobo-era EPUB library. Calibre’s batch conversion to AZW3 takes about 10 minutes for 200 books. Send-to-Kindle would handle them too — but Amazon’s conversion servers impose a 25-file-per-email limit, and each email can take up to 5 minutes to process. USB transfer with pre-converted AZW3 files is dramatically faster. If you’re switching ecosystems once, batch convert in Calibre and be done with it.

Common gotchas

  • EPUB→MOBI→Kindle via USB: If your Kindle shows the book but won’t open it, the MOBI file may be using the old MOBI7 format. Re-convert to AZW3 and try again.
  • KFX vs AZW3: KFX (generated by Kindle Previewer) supports enhanced typography — ligatures, better kerning, hyphenation — but doesn’t work on older Kindles. AZW3 works everywhere. If in doubt, use AZW3.
  • PDF→EPUB: Don’t expect miracles. Calibre’s heuristic processing helps, but scanned PDFs and tables will never convert cleanly. For PDFs, use a reflow tool like k2pdfopt instead.
  • Large batches and battery drain: When you sideload 50+ converted books via USB, the Kindle’s indexer runs for hours. Leave the Kindle plugged in overnight so it doesn’t drain the battery indexing.
